Upper eyelid surgery

Surgery is usually recommended for people over the age of 40, when sagging skin on the upper eyelids may already be apparent. However, our specialists also successfully perform surgery on clients over the age of 70, provided they do not suffer from any serious chronic illnesses.

Preparation for surgery includes an initial consultation at our clinic, during which the doctor will assess your suitability for the procedure and talk you through what will happen. Healthy clients do not need to take any special precautions, but clients with underlying health conditions must consult their doctor about their overall health first. On the day of surgery, you should not wear any makeup.

The procedures are performed under local anaesthesia to minimise bleeding and allow clients to remain conscious. The procedure takes between 60 and 80 minutes, depending on the size of the skin overhang. Afterwards, it is important to arrange for someone to drive you home and to protect your eyes with sunglasses.

To minimise the risk of swelling, it is important to avoid excessive strain on the eyes and keep your head elevated for the first three days and nights. You should sleep in a semi-sitting or semi-lying position and avoid sleeping on your side, as this can cause one or both eyelids to swell. After surgery, it is also important to regularly apply cold compresses to the eyelids using gel pads, taking care to avoid direct contact with the skin in order to prevent damage to sensitive areas.

Women should also avoid applying makeup or other cosmetic products during the healing period. All bandage care should be performed in a way that maintains their impermeability and keeps them in place until they are removed with the stitches, usually after one week. The evening before the stitches are removed, apply body lotion to the bandages to make them easier to remove.

Even after the stitches and patches have been removed, swelling and bruising may persist for some time. During this period, it is essential to rest and avoid physical exertion, sports activities and saunas. You should then gradually return to normal activities within 3–4 weeks.
